i posted some of the schaller study stuff a while back but i would like to draw attention to it again, i think within it lie some of the best arguments for why the taxi industry should remain regulated, as opposed to the effective deregulation that we are now experiencing. i encourage people to study it, this is hard researched data, scientific studies, not he said she said, here it is:

drivers for hire are safer when they can reasonably expect to pay their bills, be they taxi, uber or lyft. meter rates, gates and the number of cabs on the street affect this. this is the key reason why flooding the streets with faux taxis will never be safe. public safety or living wage issue, they are inseparable, this is what the data says.

I can't say that I agree with the way these ubers were protesting, but there is more to this story than the media is often telling you.
